Imagine for just a moment that Hillary Clinton is holding a rally and is interrupted by a conservative protester, very similarly as happened recently to Bill Clinton while he was stumping for Hillary. In response to the interruption, she laments about how she misses the good old days when people like that protester were taken out on stretchers. The crowd roars and applauds in agreement. Then she says I’d like to punch him in the face, I’ll tell ya
, again followed by enthusiastic applause.
I don’t think there would be enough hours in the day for the Fox News coverage of that story. It would be appearing in their news crawler all week that Hillary was encouraging violence against conservatives at her rallies, and that conservatives everywhere should be taking extra precaution. Conservative talk radio across the country would be abuzz with conservative callers making the comparisons between Democrats and Nazi brown-shirts. And why not? According to conservatives, Hillary has been complicit in killing a host of people, so punching someone in the face is certainly nothing she would shy away from and it’s extremely plausible that she would be encouraging her supporters to use all conservatives, not just conservative protesters, as punching bags, and more, if they could get away with it. The fits of outrage from conservatives would be nearly unbearable and constant.
But, when a Republican presidential nominee says it, it’s invariably just another one of those IOKIYAR, and nothing to protest because it’s said only in jest. Except, of course, we know that rabid conservatism often breeds more than it’s fair share of nut cases such as the two Boston men accused of ambushing and beating a 58-year old homeless Latino man because they were “inspired” by Trump. It could be argued that they were probably less inspired by Trump than they were sorry for having been caught and were desperate for any excuse to justify what they normally do, according to their extensive criminal records.
So, what else about the “good old days” does Trump miss? Does he miss Jim Crow? Does he miss dueling? Does he miss the lawless west when disputes could be solved by a sixshooter? Does he miss the monarchy when the King ruled absolutely? Trump just isn’t presidential material by any stretch of the imagination. Someone just needs to punch him in the face.
