Republican Motto: Party Before Country

All GOP Candidates Would Support Trump for President

Cruz and Rubio both have some ‘splaining to do.

Last night, all of the GOP presidential candidates reiterated their pledge that they would support Trump for the presidency should he win the GOP nomination. After weeks of listening to all of the GOP candidates excoriating Trump and predicting a liberal apocalypse on the country, and worse, if Trump were elected, we now know that they were just kidding and didn’t mean a single bad word they said about Trump. Or, and this is more likely, the Republican party has a new motto and it’s Party Before Country.

We have reached a point where the Republican party will openly support and elect a fraud, a con-man and someone who has been described as possessing authoritarian impulses, for president of the United States on the Republican ticket. It’s that or there are an awful lot of liars out there in Republican-land who have been stoking the “fraud” and “con-man” characterizations of Trump. Which is it? A little bit of both?

One thing for sure is that Cruz and Rubio lost all credibility. They are now betting the house that the GOP establishment will be able to thwart Trump at a brokered convention so that they will never have to openly campaign for Trump in the general election. Should Trump win the nomination, Cruz and Rubio will have the particularly uncomfortable task of being campaign surrogates for Trump, or at the very least having to say nice things about him that just weeks prior would have been anathema to them, kinda like someone else has. Chris Christie is already on the Trump-leash and Trump’s power is formidable. Christie is essentially mesmerized or hypnotized or has one hell of an offer that he can’t refuse. If they don’t say nice things about Trump, or revoke every bad word they’ve said in the past, will he sue them? Trump has already signaled that he would consider lawsuits against news organizations that were unflattering to him.

Will Rubio and Cruz campaign for Trump with the same feigned sincerity they expressed when they were campaigning against him? They have already admitted that they lied about Trump being a “fraud” or a “con-man”, otherwise they would never say they could support him regardless of who was running on the Democratic ticket…or would they? Let’s travel to the not too distant future and listen to a stump speech that Cruz is giving in support of Donald Trump’s presidential candidacy:

“I’m Ted Cruz and I support Donald Trump for President. Donald has for many years donated to liberal causes. He supports equal rights and nationalized health care. Not only does he not have conservative values but he’s a bona fide liberal in Republican clothes and we have no idea at all what he will do when he is elected. He’s a fraud and a con-man. It’s for these reasons and more that I wholeheartedly endorse and support Donald J. Trump for President of the United States. God Bless Me and God Bless America!”

Ted Cruz (in the near future)

Did you see what happened there? In our imaginary future and without disavowing any of the disparaging things he has said in the past about Trump, Cruz will still manage to endorse and throw his support behind a Donald Trump presidency. Very clever, indeed.

Let’s stay in this future for just a moment and take some time to listen to Rubio’s stump-for-Trump speech:

“Hi, I’m Macro Rubio and I support Donald Trump for President. Look, my reasons are clear. Donald has cheated thousands of people at his fake Trump University and he’s still not in jail. He seizes land from little old ladies and your property is next. He calls me ‘Little Man’. I’m not little. I’m big. Just ask my wife. Donald is the one with small fingers. Donald has no foreign policy experience. US foreign policy is not like a real estate deal. Donald isn’t even a real conservative with real conservative values. Donald Trump has been perhaps the most vulgar — no I don’t think perhaps — the most vulgar person to ever aspire to the presidency. It is for these reasons that I stand here before you today and endorse, on the strongest terms, my support for Donald J. Trump to the Presidency of the United States of America. Party before Country! God Bless America!”

Marco Rubio (in the near future)

Just like his dearest friend, Ted Cruz, Rubio manages to also show his strong and unwavering support for a Donald Trump presidency in a future campaign stump-for-Trump speech.

Yes, indeed. It truly is Party Before Country in Republican-land.
